The Missing Piece

Learning what to play is one thing. Understanding how it works is another.

There are a lot of ways to learn piano.

You can learn to read sheet music.
You can work on playing by ear.
You can follow tutorials, memorize songs, practice scales, and learn chords.

And there’s value in all of those things.

But learning the notes, chords, or steps is only part of the picture. Understanding the patterns underneath them can open up a whole new way of approaching music.

You can learn what to play and understand how it works.

Maybe you’re just getting started, and you’re wondering which approach will help you actually make music.

Or maybe you’ve been playing for a while.

You know some chords. You’ve learned parts of songs. You’ve picked up different musical concepts along the way.

But somehow, those pieces still aren’t connecting.

You might be able to follow along when someone shows you what to play, but struggle to figure out what to do on your own.

Or you might understand a concept in one situation but have trouble applying it somewhere else.

Sound familiar?

Whether you’re starting from scratch or building on what you already know, understanding the patterns underneath music can make a big difference.

Because when you begin recognizing how things connect, learning piano starts to feel a lot less like collecting information and a lot more like making music.

What if there’s another way?

What if piano isn’t as complicated as it seems?

Think about how many songs you’ve heard in your lifetime.

Different artists. Different genres. Different melodies.

But underneath all that variety, music is built on patterns.

Patterns in scales.
Patterns in chords.
Patterns in progressions.
Patterns in how notes and chords move together.

And once you start recognizing those patterns, something changes.

Key of C

  1. C
  2. G
  3. Am
  4. F

Key of G

  1. G
  2. D
  3. Em
  4. C

The pattern

  1. 1
  2. 5
  3. 6
  4. 4

The chords change. The pattern stays the same: 1 → 5 → 6 → 4

Instead of treating every chord, progression, or song as a completely separate thing to memorize, you begin to recognize relationships.

You start to understand why certain chords work together.

You begin to see how something you’ve learned in one key can work in another.

And you start making musical choices based on understanding instead of guessing.

That’s when piano starts to make more sense.

And it’s the foundation of PatternPiano.

PatternPiano by Keyology

Meet PatternPiano

Less memorizing.
More understanding.
More actual playing.

PatternPiano is a complete, self-paced piano program that teaches you how to recognize, understand, and use the patterns underneath music.

Instead of relying on traditional sheet music instruction, learning everything by ear, or memorizing isolated songs, you’ll learn a practical system for understanding how music works.

You’ll discover how chords are built.
How they relate to one another.
How to recognize common progressions.
How to move those progressions into different keys.

And most importantly, how to turn that understanding into music you can actually play.

Whether you’re sitting at a piano for the first time or you’ve been playing for years, PatternPiano gives you a clearer path forward.

Because the goal isn’t just to know more about piano.

It’s to be able to sit down and PLAY.

PLAY-BY-PATTERN method

The PLAY-BY-PATTERN™ Method

Don’t just learn the pattern.
See what you can do with it.

PatternPiano teaches you to recognize musical patterns, practice them, move them into new situations, and use them to make music.

Here’s what that looks like.

See It

Recognize the pattern.

Learn to identify the shapes, relationships, and musical structures that help make piano easier to understand.

1 / 4

The result?

Instead of simply collecting information, you’re learning how to use it.

One pattern at a time.

From Learning to Playing

Imagine sitting down at the piano…
and knowing where to begin.

Not because you’ve memorized every note.
Not because someone is telling you exactly what to play.

But because you understand how the music works.

Imagine recognizing the chords in a progression.
Understanding how those chords fit together.
Knowing how to use them with both hands.

Being able to take something you’ve learned and apply it to another song or a different key.

And eventually, having the freedom to add your own rhythm, movement, and musical ideas.

Whether you’re learning these skills for the first time or building on years of experience, that’s the kind of progress we’re working toward.

Not just learning more about piano.

Learning how to use what you know to make music.

REAL STUDENTS. REAL EXPERIENCES.

That moment when it finally clicks.

Sometimes, the biggest breakthroughs aren't about learning the most complicated chords or playing the fastest.

They're about finally understanding something that used to feel confusing.

Knowing what to practice.

Recognizing a pattern you've seen before.

Or sitting down at the piano and realizing you're actually making music.

Here's what students from the beta program had to say about their experiences.

  • From knowing a few notes to actually playing

“Before I just knew what the letters of the keys were, I did not know how to play chords, I didn't know there were different types of chords. I didn't know how to play in different keys and I definitely did not know how to read a chord chart. I can do all those things now!”

    Camarryn Beale

    Beta Student

  • When the number system finally made sense

“I had heard of the number system before, but I never fully understood its purpose. This [program] helped me connect it to chords and patterns in a way that finally made sense.”

    Richard M. Smith

    Beta Student

  • “I actually feel like I am becoming a musician!”

“You have no idea how much this has lifted my spirit. I actually feel like I am becoming a musician! I realize there is sooo much more to learn and to know, but now, thanks to you, I can actually sit down at my instrument and have a working idea of what to do.”

    Gwen Mills

    Beta Student

Different starting points. Different experiences. One common thread: growing in understanding and putting that knowledge into practice.

That's the kind of progress PatternPiano was designed to help you build.

Your PatternPiano Journey

Five Key Stages. 27 Course Units.
One clear path to playing.

PatternPiano is organized into five progressive learning stages we call Keys.

Each Key builds on the one before it, helping you develop your understanding and playing skills step by step.

Together, they contain 27 units, each with a focused lesson, guided exercises, and musical applications.

  1. You'll get familiar with the keyboard, explore major and minor chords, learn to read basic chord charts, begin coordinating both hands, and practice simple rhythm patterns.

    Milestone: I can make music.

Five Keys. Countless possibilities.

By the end of the program, you’ll have a clearer understanding of how music works and a collection of practical tools you can keep using as you develop your own playing style.

You have experience, but you'd like a clearer system for understanding harmony, progressions, and musical relationships.

Wherever you’re starting, understanding the patterns can change how you play.

Brittney Pressley, piano educator and creator of PLAY-BY-PATTERN

Meet your coach, Brittney

I’ve been where you are.

For a long time, I knew things about piano that I struggled to actually use.

I learned chords.
I understood musical concepts.
I could play things I’d memorized.

But when it came time to sit down and make music on my own, I often felt like I was missing something.

And honestly, that was frustrating.

Because I was putting in the work.
I was learning.
But all those different pieces of information weren’t connecting in the way I wanted them to.

Things began to change when I started recognizing the patterns underneath what I was learning.

Instead of looking at every chord, progression, and song as something completely separate, I started understanding how they related.

And that understanding changed the way I approached the piano.

That’s the experience I want to help other people have.

Through my work as a piano educator, I’ve taught hundreds of adult students, from complete beginners to people who’ve been playing for years.

And one of the things I’ve found most rewarding is watching someone experience that moment when something finally clicks.

When they’re no longer just following instructions.
They’re beginning to understand what they’re doing.

That’s why I created PatternPiano.

I wanted to build a learning experience that helps people understand music and develop the ability to actually use what they’re learning.

Whether you’re starting from the beginning or trying to connect the pieces you’ve already learned, I want to help you build a foundation you can keep growing from.

Because learning piano should help you become more capable of making music, not more dependent on someone telling you exactly what to play.

And I’d love to help you experience that for yourself.

— Brittney
